Secret Pen Pal Scavenger Hunt 2014 - City Explorer's Kit

As I'm typing this, I'm exporting the video portion for the Secret Pen Pal Scavenger Hunt!  I'm so excited about the cute little minute-long video I made just for this project!  I thought it would be appropriate since I'm a video editor / motion graphics artist, after all...I can't share it just yet but I will be uploading it to my YouTube channel for those of you who are interested in seeing it (besides my pen pal!)

Yesterday, I gathered the most important items for the City Explorer's Kit.  Check it out:

Chandler was very generous with the Batdorf and Bronson goodies (there is another sticker that's not pictured), I went by Only You Tattoo and picked up some post cards, business cards and stickers (some of those are missing from this photo as well), Chandler also went by Octane yesterday and picked us up a couple of cappuccinos - I had an extra cup to share (hooray!), I'm spreading the Fresh+i+Am love by parting with a Roxie sticker and finally, I went by The Varsity (the one by me) and picked up a paper hat!  Very Atlanta.

I hope my pen pal likes it!  I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to assemble everything.  The cup is throwing me off with the City Explorer's Kit right now and I think I might bundle the Batdorf & Bronson pen with the Writing Kit.  Hmmm....decisions, decisions...

How's your Monday going?

Memorial Day Weekend 2013

I hope your Memorial Day was a fun one!  I had a great one!  I saw The Great Gatsby with L and C and I LOVED IT!! I also saw Star Trek Into Darkness with my Dad, my Dad also brought me back some cheese from Wisconsin and I went to Only You Tattoo, where this happened:

It's goin down My lovely Cupid

I got an old school version of this and I love it!  Thanks to Charles who made it happen!  I'll post a healed photo once she's settled in.
While I was there, I also chatted with Matt about a super-secret piece I'd like to collaborate with him on.  He seemed pretty excited about it and I can't wait to get it done - but I think I have to wait until after Summer...

Hope you have a good week!

Friday the 13th

I did it!  I finally did it!  What's that?  What did I do?  I got a Friday the 13th tattoo!  Wow - I'm quite the poet...Um, yes, I got a Friday the 13th tattoo like I've been saying I would do for a long time now.  I don't know what it is but this past week something in me has been like: "You WILL do what you say you're going to do".  So after some light protesting from my old man, I left on my tattoo adventure - including finally making it out to Only You Tattoo.
I had been saying I'd make it to the shop after Deb (our graphic designer) told me that her husband, Matt, was opening it - but that was FOREVER ago.  Okay, maybe more like over 2 years ago...
Matt is the kind gentleman who tattooed my Godparent stars on me 4+ years ago and just so you know, I WILL be back next year to get matching stars on the other side when my Goddaughter turns 10.

flash

ANYWAYS - in the grand tradition of Friday the 13th, some tattoo shops offer up a Friday the 13th special: you pick from the specific flash sheet (it changes every Friday the 13th) and you pay $13 for the tattoo + $7 lucky tip.  I had always wanted to do it but I don't know what had been holding me back.  So on my crazy out-of-character momentum of last week, I just went and did it.
At first, I was a little nervous because it had been pouring down rain so much that I was a little nervous to leave my area but it cleared up after the old man and I went to dinner.  Then, I was a little nervous about the parking situation.  I know the general area where the shop is and parking is quite limited but I pulled into the precarious lot and luckily for me, a girl was just leaving.  Her spot?  Right outside the shop door!  Is that an awesome sign or what?!  After some inner celebration and much gratitude to the Universe, I went inside and signed in.  I thought about specifying Matt for my tattoo but as I glanced over the list, I saw that quite a few folks had already done that, so I decided I wouldn't be picky about who I got because if they're at Matt's shop, they've got to be awesome.

Spectating   Spectating

After about an hour of waiting and debating where my new tattoo would go, it was my turn.  I was being called back by Charles Chatov.  I follow quite a few tattoo artists on Instagram and he's one of them so I was very excited.
After I got all stenciled up, it was time to get drilled.  Matt was setting up his station so we chatted about work and Deb and stuff.  The whole time I was hoping he didn't get mad at me for not asking for him but everyone else was asking for him so...you know.  I also think they stopped doing tattooer preferences after a certain time just for the sake of getting everyone done by midnight - which was the cut off.  Either way, I told Matt I would try to bring a special guest by the shop on Tuesday and I'm hoping that last week's momentum will carry through to this week.  Maybe I'll schedule my consult with Matt for Tuesday so I can get started talking about my chest piece.  That's another story.
I kindly asked Charles if I could take some action shots - to which he said, "You better hurry up - I'm almost done!"  I think these came out okay.  Taking these also helped distract me from the nagging pain of the needle.  And despite his very serious look, he was quite smiley!

So what did I pick?  The boat, of course!

Small and simple but I like it!  And even though I didn't sit for hours and hours, my experience was very enjoyable.  I think I should make it a point to get work done by each member of the Only You Tattoo crew since they are all amazingly talented artists.  Check out their work here!

ICE ATL - My artist mystery is solved!

A few months back, I accompanied Lauren and her friend Cynthia to Young Blood Gallery and Boutique for the first time. I had been interested in it since I had heard about the the Young Blood gals a few years back during my first two I.C.E. shows.  While I was there, I was looking for an interesting piece to take home to my old man but I couldn't really find anything that caught my fancy - until I started checking out the sale bin.
After going through a few pieces and thinking about giving up, I saw the piece that made my jaw drop.

I instantly fell in love with the piece but I didn't know who the artist was. I didn't think I would ever find out who the artist was...until I was walking around yesterday's Indie Craft Experience with my Dad.
My Dad's gf is really into local artists and handmade items and my Dad likes to indulge us by going with us to both I.C.E. shows almost every year, so it was only natural that he joined us yesterday.  While my Dad and I walked around, I noticed a very small booth with great looking artwork.  I stopped to check them out and get some post cards - and then I SAW IT.  I saw the painting above (it's called "Cocquette" and you can buy it here).  I flipped out!  And there she was - Kelly McKernan - sitting in the middle of all her amazing artwork!  Of course I had a total fan girl moment and told her that I fell in love with "Cocquette" and I felt bad that I didn't know who the artist was and how I was so happy to finally know who it was AND that I got to meet her!  She was so sweet!  And her other artwork was AMAZING.  Needless to say, I bought 5 postcards (including the postcard version of "Cocquette" to give to my step-sister) so that I could frame them in my house.

This one took my breath away:

"Redemption"

But it was this one that I absolutely fell in love with:

"Coy"

AND I was so happy to see that it was woman painting all these lovely prints! But that got me thinking...

...What if I commissioned a piece from Kelly herself and had Only You Tattoo's Matt Greenhalgh tattoo it on me?! That would be the best artist combination EVER!!! I'm so inspired!  We'll see... I'll have to come up with an idea first...or maybe I'll get the print that started it all?  Or maybe the lovely lady from the "Coy" print?  There's so many lovely ladies to choose from, I'll have to think on that for a moment...

Until then, please check out Kelly's work on her website, be sure to buy a few prints and, if you're in the ATL area, be sure to catch her at one of her upcoming shows.
Also, don't forget to check out Matt Greenhalgh and the Only You Tattoo Crew here!
These artists will totally get your creative juices flowing for some DIY goodness this summer

Love and kisses,
